THE ALLIANCE OF COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES (ACAM) ANNOUNCES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:  SHARON ZACHARY-HEYLIGER

HOUSTON, TX  -- (June 20, 2009)  -- Sharon Zachary-Heyliger has been named the new executive director of the Alliance of Community Assistance Ministries (ACAM), after an exhaustive region-wide search, and hit the ground running on April 13, 2009.

Carolyn Watson, program director for the Rockwell Fund, chaired the search committee.   "We are very pleased to have Ms. Zachary-Heyliger as part of ACAM.  This position is so unlike most other executive director positions.  ACAM isn't just about ACAM, it's about understanding and responding to the needs of our growing number of community assistance ministries (CAMs) members.  Our members address the most basic and important needs of people in communities across Houston and the Gulf Coast region."

ACAM members are an important part of the area's “social service safety net,” preventing homelessness, meeting basic needs and helping people remain or become self-sufficient. They annually serve more than 223,000 people with food, clothing, employment services, rent/utilities assistance, and much more.  ACAM members utilize a 12,000-person volunteer force and streamline the desire of more than 375 congregations to respond to local needs.

Ms. Zachary-Heyliger will become the go-to person for information in the region regarding how basic needs are provided in very specific neighborhoods.  She will also be the contact person for organizing relief efforts for ACAM members, in the event of natural disaster.

"It is a very demanding job that requires both keen management skills, as well as, sincere compassion and understanding for the people our members help every day," Watcon continues.

Ms. Zachary-Heyliger’s educational background includes a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology and undergraduate degrees in Psychology and in Business.  She is also a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor (CCDCI) in the State of Ohio.  See her full bio here.

Ms. Zachary-Heyliger replaces the outgoing executive director, Martha Macris, who is once again heading up Memorial Assistance Ministrieis (MAM), an anchor member of ACAM.
